Let’s Make a BILTONG Maker Box...

My Biltong dryer plans have been designed to make best use of a 2440mm x 1220mm sheet of 12mm MDF board simply because this size seems to represent best value. You could probably use thinner board but this may be more expensive!

At the time of creating these plans, a 2440mm x 1220mm x 12mm sheet of MDF was available from B&Q for £13.96.

You may be able to ask your supplier to cut down the board for you prior to purchase to make it easier to transport in a car; my cutting guide shows you how with only three cuts!

You will also need two 2100mm lengths of 18mm x 18mm planed timber for the construction of the Biltong box. These make it easier to screw the Biltong box together and also form legs to stand the box off the floor.

At the time of creating these plans, a 2100mm x 18mm x 18mm length of planed square timber was available from B&Q for £0.41.

Add in some screws and you could make your own biltong drying box for under twenty quid!

Hanging the Biltong

The ideal way to hang your Biltong is to use threaded rods (say 6mm) which can be hung across the box through holes drilled in both sides. The box is designed so that two 500mm rod lengths can be cut and used from a standard 1000mm length.

At the time of creating these plans, a1000 mm M6 threaded rod was available at B&Q for £1.99, and a packet of M6 nuts was £1.78.

Adding Heat to your Biltong box

A gentle heat source will increase the speed of drying your Biltong, although we do not want too high a heat as the Biltong meat may begin to cook. The heat from a 40w or 60w standard light bulb will generally be sufficient. A simple Batten Holder screwed to the Biltong box and a length of flex with a fused plug should be quite straightforward.

At the time of creating these plans, a batten holder was available at B&Q for £1.99.

There is spare MDF in the cutting diagram to create a shelf so as to protect the electrics from any meat juice spillage.

Adding Ventilation to your Biltong Maker

If you can wire in the bulb, it is just as simple to add a small fan. It is advisable to fit a guard to any exposed fan blades to avoid harm and minimise risks.

These too are relatively cheap to buy and at the time of creating these plans, a suitable AC fan was available at Maplins for £6.99 and a guard for only 99p.

Now you know how to make Biltong at home; and nothing beats home made Biltong. I've done the research for you; all you need is the plans!
